What is expected during the 20th CPC National Congress?
The National Congress of the Chinese Communist Party (CPC) is a party congress that is held every five years. The National Congress is the highest body within the Chinese Communist Party. Since 1987 the National Congress has been held in the months of October or November. The ruling party makes assessment of its development goals, appreciate what was achieved and make new commitments for the country’s aspirations for the future.
Amendment of the CPC Constitution
The party Constitution is expected to be amended during the 20th National Congress to promote further the development of socialism with Chinese characteristics. The amendment will include key theories and strategic thought contained in a report to be delivered at the 20th CPC National Congress, according to a CPC statement. The party’s constitution was last amended in 2017 to enshrine “Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics.”
The CPC national Congress is aimed at self-improvement at individual level as well as the party and setting the best priories to achieve the set national goals.
What are China’s two centennial goals?
By 2021, when China celebrated the CPC’s centenary, the first centenary goal was achieved, where the country won the war against absolute poverty, improving lives of Chinese people, hence being able to “build a moderately prosperous society in all respects.”
The second centenary goals of “building a modern socialist country that is prosperous, strong, democratic, culturally advanced and harmonious,” is expected to be attained in 2049. In this year, China will be celebrating 100 years of the founding of the People’s Republic of China.
This is the reason why much of the reform being pushed in recent years aims to prevent and control major risks, alleviate poverty, curb pollution, and deepen supply-side structural reform to push forward sustained and healthy economic and social development.
