African leaders and associations of African former students in China have sent various messages of encouragement and support to the government and the people of China during this difficult moment of struggling with the fight against corona virus.

The President of the United Democratic Front (UDF) Party in Malawi, Hon. Atupele Muluzi this week presented packages of medical materials to fight Corona virus to the Chinese ambassador to Malawi H.E Liu Hongyang. Hon. A. Muluzi who happens also to be a Peking University Dongfang Scholar 2019, said that, “the spread of the COVID 19 is a global problem with China the most affected so far and firmly in the driving seat in fighting this epidemic. We need to join hands in this effort, #TogetherWeCan”.

The Chinese Ambassador to Malawi H.E Liu Hanghong, while receiving the medical supplies pointed out that,  “A friend in need is a friend indeed. Today I am extremely honored to receive from RH. Atupele Muluzi, President of UDF packages of badly needed materials to fight against COVID19 in China. Another symbol of solidarity. On behalf of the Chinese people I would like to say thank you”.

Many more Peking University International alumni from Somalia, South Africa, Mali, Liberia, Rwanda, Senegal, Uganda, Burundi, Cameroon, South Sudan etc,    sent messages of encouragement to the Chinese people and government of China in the fight against COVID19.

President Xi Jinping commended Africa’s support for China in the fight against corona virus as an illustration of brotherly friendship.  The Ethiopian Prime Minster Abiy Ahmed, the Rwandan president Paul Kagame, Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta, Ugandan president Yoweri Museveni, South African Ministers, were among a number of African leaders who sent the messages of sympathy and encouragement to the Chinese people.

Since the Corona Virus (COVID-19) outbreak in China, the government of the People’s Republic of China has worked tirelessly to up infrastructure and mobilize medical teams to treat the sick and prevent new infections throughout the country especially in the most affected region of Wuhan. The WHO commended China for “setting a new standard for outbreak response’’.

Two specialized hospitals namely; the Huoshenshan hospital covering 25,000 square meters and the Leishenshan hospital both set up in a record time of   just ten days will remain a world wonder even after the defeat of Corona virus. Putting up two hospitals to treat corona virus in a record time, is a symbol of urgency, dedication and efficiency of the Communist Party of China (CPC) in executing government responsibilities. It is a commitment to ensure maximum safety and wellbeing of the citizens and other nationalities living in China, including foreign students. The medical teams on the frontline and community volunteers working day and night have done a commendable and heroic job that has tremendously reduced the number deaths and infections. The mortality rate of the COVID19 has been contained at the lowest rate of 2.1 percent.

The fight against corona virus is not a problem for China alone. It’s a global challenge that requires collective efforts and response from the international community. In as much as our countries have borders, the corona virus respects none and every community and country is vulnerable. In order to win the war against COVID 19, each country should act as its brother’s keeper in the world community.
