As US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken concluded his visit to China political analysts question whether the visit gives hope for renewed cooperation between the US and China. The US Secretary of State said he had traveled to China to “strengthen high-level challenges of communication, to make clear our positions and intentions in areas of disagreement, and to explore areas where we might work together when our interests align on shared transnational challenges. And we did all of that.”
On his part, the Chinese president Xi Jinping said that the two sides, had “agreed to follow through on the common understandings” reached by himself and President Biden on the sidelines of a summit last year in Bali, and made progress on other issues. “This is very good,” said President Xi.
The Chinese State Councillor Qin Gang, said that coming into the talks, the relationship between the U.S. and China was “at the lowest point since its establishment.” Beijing officials said that the all-time low relationship between US and China “does not serve the fundamental interests of the two peoples or meet the shared expectations of the international community.”
Although the US side on a number of occasions promise to improve the relationship between the two countries, their actions and words do not match. U.S officials have always provoked China over Taiwan, by selling arms and supporting a separatist agenda of breaking away Taiwan which is an undisputable territory of mainland China. The interference of US in the internal matters of China regarding Taiwan threatens peace and stability in the Taiwan straits region. In theory, the US claims to be commitment to the ‘one China policy’, but in practice sounds war drums, by plotting a proxy war against China using Taiwan.
According to political analysts, talks and meetings between US and Chinese officials will always be there, but the US foreign policy of trying to contain China is not likely to Change any time soon.
