“A community with a shared future for mankind” means the future of every country is closely linked and people stand together through thick and thin. Building this planet into a harmonious family and turning the yearning for a better life of people all over the world into reality are the goals of building such a community.
In March 2013, Chinese President Xi Jinping conveyed China’s judgment on the direction of human civilization to the world for the first time during a speech at Moscow State Institute of International Relations.
“Mankind, by living in the same global village within the same time and space where history and reality meet, has increasingly emerged as a community of common destiny in which everyone has in themselves a little bit of others,” he said.
In the past decade, the idea of “building a community with a shared future for mankind” has progressed from being a concept to actual practice. Thoughts have been further developed and theoretical systems perfected.
President Xi has delivered keynote speeches on many important occasions, continuing to comprehensively and systematically expound on the concept for deepening the understanding of the international community.
In September 2015, Xi fully explained the meaning of “building a community with a shared future for mankind” at the General Debate of the 70th Session of the UN General Assembly, stressing the need to build an equal partnership and create a fair security pattern.
“We should establish partnerships in which countries treat each other as equals with mutual consultations and mutual understanding and build a security pattern featuring fairness and justice contributed to and shared jointly by nations,” noted Xi.
He called for open, innovative and inclusive development prospects that benefit all, and inter-civilization exchanges featuring harmony in diversity and inclusiveness.
From traditional friendly countries to more cooperative partners, from neighboring countries to the world, from bilateral relations to multilateral issues, the idea of “building a community with a shared future for mankind” has increasingly taken root in practice and achieved fruitful results.
During his keynote speech at the opening ceremony of the B20 Summit in September 2016, Xi said there is no island completely cut off from the rest of the world in the era of economic globalization.
“As members of the global village, we need to cultivate the awareness of shared future for mankind. Partnership is the most valuable asset of the G20 and the choice of all countries as they rise up together to global challenges,” he said.
Elaborating on the Chinese proposition for “building a community with a shared future for mankind”, Xi called for advancing democracy in international relations and rejecting dominance by just one or several countries at the United Nations Office in Geneva in January 2017.
He said all countries should jointly shape the future of the world, write international rules, manage global affairs and ensure that development outcomes are shared by all.
In the global field, China proposes to “build a community with a shared future for human health, humans and nature, cyberspace, nuclear security, life on Earth, ocean, global development and human security”, which responds to the general demands of people from all over the world, winning increasingly wide understanding and support.

China champions the development of such a community and has encouraged the evolution of the global governance system, Xi remarked at the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC) in October 2017.
“We call on the people of all countries to work together to build a community with a shared future for mankind, to build an open, inclusive, clean and beautiful world that enjoys lasting peace, universal security, and common prosperity,” he said.
In October 2022, Xi reiterated that China is dedicated to promoting a community with a shared future for mankind and has always been committed to its foreign policy goals of upholding world peace and promoting common development, when delivering a report at the 20th CPC National Congress.
Listed as one of the essential requirements for Chinese modernization, this idea focuses on the common interests and common well-being of all mankind.
The Chinese plan proposed to promote the progress of human society and the peaceful development of the world is an important part of the Xi Jinping Thought on Diplomacy.
