In a virtual meeting with European Union (EU) Chiefs on April 1, the Chinese President Xi Jinping urged the EU to work with China in overcoming factors that create a turbulent world. The war in Ukraine is one of such unfortunate happening in the 21st century that hasdestabilized the EU, and its shocks felt in many countries in the world. China has repeatedly called for a peaceful settlement of the Russia-Ukraine war through dialogue.
Om Monday May 9, when President Xi held a virtual meeting with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, he called on the two countries to work together to maintain a sound and steady relationship to contribute significantly to world peace and tranquility. The Chinese leader also stressed the importance cooperation between Germany and China in various fields including trade, artificial intelligence, environmental protection and new technologies among other.
The two sides should stand for true multilateralism, uphold international fairness and justice, promote an open world economy, and make global development more balanced, coordinated and inclusive, Xi said. The Chinese president called on the European side to show historical responsibility and political wisdom, bear in mind the long-term stability of Europe and promote a solution in a responsible manner.” The security of Europe should be kept in the hands of Europeans themselves,” Xi said.
The Germany Chancellor Olaf Scholz, said that the two countries will have a dialogue on maintaining stable global supply chains, macroeconomic policy coordination and others, and step up cooperation in a wide range of areas, including trade and investment, climate change and COVID-19 response. He also said that Germany is prepared to enhance communication and coordination with China on the multilateral front and promote the sound development of Europe-China relations.
China and Germany will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties in October this year.
