Mayor of Francistown Gaone Majere has commended the Chinese community and the Chinese medical team in Botswana’s second largest city for their contribution to the local economic and social development.
Speaking at an event to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival held in Francistown on Sunday, Majere praised the Chinese community and businessmen for their efforts to tackle unemployment in the city.
He invited Chinese manufacturing companies to invest in Francistown, saying “we want to revive our city and we believe that manufacturing companies are the ones which can assist us in that regard.”
Chinese Ambassador to Botswana Fan Yong said that this year marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between China and Botswana, with enhanced bilateral partnership and cooperation in various sectors.
“China will partner with Botswana to reinforce our mutual and political trust, integrate development strategies, deliver mutual benefits and foster shared learning,” he noted.
The celebration drew about 400 participants, including members of the Francistown city council, representatives of the medical sector, the Confucius Institutes at Botswana universities, and local Chinese enterprises.
The event was organized by the Chinese Chamber of Commerce in Francistown and the Chinese medical team at Nyangabwe hospital in the city, featuring Chinese and Botswana songs and dances, African drumming and a variety of games, as well as a Chinese food festival.
