Youth’s role takes center stage in global governance event in South Africa

The “Global Governance, Youth Action” media event, organized by China Media Group (CMG), took place on Tuesday in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Under the theme “Youth discussing global governance: Building a modern future together for China and Africa,” the event brought together more than 100 guests from government departments, youth organizations, media organizations and business communities on youth-driven contributions to global governance.

CMG president Shen Haixiong praised the collaborative spirit of Chinese and African youth, who have driven innovation in sectors like digital economy and green energy. “They are not only active participants in global governance, but also significant shapers of its future.”

Shen said CMG will utilize its extensive global communication network to build more platforms for exchanges and vividly share the stories of young people from different countries working together and forging ahead.

Chinese Ambassador to South Africa Wu Peng echoed these remarks, noting that the China-proposed Global Governance Initiative has received widespread recognition and positive responses from the international community.

Wu highlighted the upcoming G20 summit, set to take place in Johannesburg later this month – the first time the summit will be held on the African continent – and expressed hope that Chinese and African youth would play an active role in it.

He called on young people from both sides to further strengthen exchanges and cooperation, learn from each other, and strive to be bridges and links in China-Africa cooperation, becoming steadfast defenders of international fairness and justice.

Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, former Chairperson of the African Union Commission, said youth are the driving force behind innovation and progress.

With more than 60 percent of Africa’s population under the age of 25, she emphasized the importance of empowering young people through education, technology and cross-border cooperation to ensure they become active participants in governance and development.

Muliswa Magedi, representing South Africa’s Department of Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities, said that youth are not only the beneficiaries of public policy, but also the participants in national development, drivers of innovation, and bridges connecting different cultures.

Magedi also acknowledged CMG’s positive role in promoting cultural exchanges between Africa and China and amplifying the voices of youth, hoping that through media integration and technological innovation, China-Africa youth exchanges and cooperation will be further strengthened.

Participants also held in-depth discussions on the role of youth in global governance, digital innovation empowering China-Africa modernization cooperation, China-Africa youth entrepreneurship, and sustainable development.
