Delegates to the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC) began arriving in the Chinese capital city of Beijing on Thursday ahead of the opening of the Congress on Monday. According to media reports, a total of 2,296 delegates have been elected to attend the congress, with   771 of the delegates, or 33.6 percent of the total, are from the grassroots, including 192 workers, 85 farmers and 266 professional and technicians. There are 619 female delegates, or 27 percent of the total, while 264 delegates from 40 ethnic minority groups is expected to attend the congress.

Since the CPC is a people centred political party, and works for the interest of all Chinese people whether party members or not, the Chinese President Xi Jinping, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, presided over a symposium to solicit opinions and suggestions from non-CPC personages on the draft report to the upcoming 20th CPC National Congress.

The event, took place on August 31 in Beijing, and attended by the leaders from the central committees of the non-CPC political parties, head of the All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce, and people with no party affiliation. This is an important aspect indicating the nature of democratic governance and respect of people’s views within and outside the ruling party, for consensual national planning and development.

The delegates will be presented with the report of achievement in the last five years and also put forward new goals for the next five year plan. Under president Xi Jinping leadership, a lot has been achieved in the last five years in terms of political, economic and social development. China’s foreign policy is also commended for embracing multilateralism and rule based international order.

President Xi Jinping, also held a symposium for soliciting opinions and suggestions on the current economic situation and economic work in the second half of the year from non-CPC personages. During the symposium, Xi, said that China’s economy is resilient, has great potential and is full of vitality and the fundamentals of the Chinese economy will remain sound in the long run.

Heads of the central committees of eight non-Communist parties and the All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce, as well as a representative of personages without party affiliations, made their respective speeches, agreeing with the CPC Central Committee’s analysis of the current economic situation and considerations for economic work in the second half. It should be noted that despite setbacks caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, China’s economy picked very fast, as the measures put in place to fight the pandemic allowed the re-opening of business and industries in good time.

On October 18, 2017, President Xi Jinping delivered a speech at the 19th national Congress of the Communist Party of China, where he called for securing “a Decisive Victory in Building a Moderately Prosperous Society in All Respects and Strive for the Great Success of Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era.” As the 20th National Congress begins, it’s a continuation of the journey towards National Rejuvenation.

At Africa-China Review, we wish President Xi Jinping, the CPC, and the people of China great success of 20th National Congress for the benefit of the Chinese people and a shared future for mankind with the rest of the world.
