Botswana has on Tuesday issued a travel advisory against South Africa, as a result of the unrest witnessed in the country in the past few days.
In a statement, Botswana’s Ministry of International Affairs and Cooperation said it advises its citizens to avoid unnecessary travel to some parts of South Africa, particularly KwaZulu Natal provinces and Gauteng Province, due to the ongoing incidents of violence and unrest in those areas.
“Batswana who are already in South Africa are advised to exercise extreme caution and avoid unnecessary movements, especially in cities such as Johannesburg and Durban.” Read the statement.
Batswana truck drivers have also been advised to consider alternative routes to avoid protest areas.
The protests are mostly associated with former South Africa’s President Jacob Zuma, who was given a 15-month sentence after defying the Constitutional Court’s order which compelled him to appear and give evidence at the state capture commission in February.
