China achievements under CPC in the last 100 years laudable

Editorial

The Communist Party of China (CPC) will hold its centenary celebration on July 1, having been founded on July 1, 1921. The CPC is the biggest Political organization in the world with more than 90 million members. At the founding of the CPC, China was a very poor country but today, it is the second largest economy in the world, and in a few years to come, will join the ranks of  the developed nations.

Every five years, the party Congress convenes to set out major policies which are the guiding principles in the socio-economic and political governance of China. The rapid economic development realized under the CPC leadership is partly due to proper planning and execution of the set priorities.  Committed leadership, unity and continuity of the ruling party have been key in China’s transformational journey towards prosperity in the last century.

People centred governance has enabled the leadership of China to focus at the priorities that improve the well-being of all the Chinese people without discrimination. Just last year, China won the war against absolute poverty after lifting almost 100 million people out of poverty in eight years. Eradicating rural poverty has been a key initiative of President Xi Jinping since coming to power in 2012.

China has safeguarded her sovereignty and has joined the world in promoting global peace and order. Today, China is among the top contributors of both funds and troops to the United Nations (UN) peacekeeping program, a strong confirmation of her support for multilateralism, global peace and order.

From a weak nation in 1921, China has been able to build its military capabilities to one of the strongest countries in the world. The development in science and technology comes among the world’s best, sometimes out competing the developed world. From space exploration to artificial intelligence (AI), China has made tremendous achievements. In the last twenty years, China did not have a high-speed rail service but today, it  boasts of the best high speed railway technology and biggest network,  whereas the  US is struggling  to catch up with China.

Like the rest of the industrialized countries in the world, China is much concerned about effects of climate change. It has implemented policies to curb emissions and stem further degradation, such as by signing the 2015 Paris Agreement on climate and pledging to reach carbon neutrality by 2060. China has embarked in a massive campaign of planting billions of trees in the recent decades to tackle desertification and effects of climate change.

China has led the world in global health initiatives in the current fight against the Corona virus (COVID-19) pandemic. Despite her own domestic challenges with the pandemic, China came to the help of many countries around the world by providing the required materials, equipment and the much needed vaccines. Experience has shown that there is no country that can win the war against COVID-19 on its own without cooperation with other countries. The world has also had the experience that the pandemic affected the rich and poor nations in equal measure.

The CPC’s journey in the past century has been long and with challenges. The resilience of the Chinese people to overcome such challenges must be saluted and emulated by many other developing countries. The Chinese people must be proud and confident of themselves for the miraculous achievements in the last century and move forward towards national rejuvenation and the achievement of two centenary goals by 2049.
