Indigenous Resources Mobilization of China in Fight against COVID-19 Appreciated

Innovation and Technology Minister Abrham Belay of Ethiopia appreciated China’s success in controlling the spread of COVID-19 and the way it mobilized indigenous resources, including its globally advanced traditional medicine, in the fierce fight against the virus.


A forum on traditional Chinese Medicine and International Cooperation to Fight against COVID-19 Pandemic organized by China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine was held virtually today.

In his keynote address, Innovation and Technology Minister Abrham Belay said Chinese Traditional Medicine has been perpetual for over 23 centuries now and one of the widely respected, effective and applied cure both in China and elsewhere in the world.  

China, therefore, admirably mobilized its indigenous resources, including its globally way advanced traditional medicine in the fierce fight against the pandemic between the outbreak and successful control of the spread of COVID-19, he added.

“In my view, China has once again taught the global community an authentic lesson in taking firm policy stand to rely on indigenous knowledge and treasured resources to face massive scale challenges in the likes of COVID-19 pandemic and come out of victorious.”      

Furthermore, the minister stated that Chinese Traditional Medicine is a herbal or local wisdom analogue of a local political or social wisdom inherently very effective and capable to heal and cure wounds. “The approach is simple – Allow it to work out!”

International collaborations being instruments to foster knowledge exchange and explorations of mutually beneficial opportunities, the Government of Ethiopia would like to stress on its renewed interest to expand collaborations with the Chinese government and the Chinese private sector to jointly work on ways to develop similar ingenious resources in the fight against COVID-19, Abrham underscored.

Vice Premier of the State Council of China, Sun Chunlan said the forum would contribute to exchange knowledge and information on traditional medicine and cooperation to halt the COVID-19.

The Government of China is ready to work with all stakeholders in promoting traditional medicine, she added.

Leaders and representatives of various countries, including senior Chinese government officials, attended the video conference.
