The world is watching US and China positions on Russian-Ukraine war

Since the war broke out between Russia and Ukraine  two months ago, the world is watching the role played by the two largest economies and super powers in the world to ensure that the two countries stop the war and embrace peace.

The US has taken sides by supporting and arming Ukraine to fight Russia. On Sunday, the U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin visited Ukraine and met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The US officials pledged a further $713m to help Ukraine in its war effort. After the visit, the US defence secretary, Lloyd Austin said that Russia should be  “weakened to the point where it can’t do things like invade Ukraine.”

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken told reporters in Poland after visiting Kyiv along with U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin that while Russia is trying to “brutalize” parts of Ukraine, “Ukrainians are standing strong, and they’re doing that with the support that we have coordinated from literally around the world.”

The above statements are enough to show that instead of US helping to find a solution that can stop the war between the two countries, it is instead adding fuel to escalate the war by supplying arms to Ukraine. Secondly, by taking side, the US has made itself the judge by condemning Russia for attacking Ukraine disregarding Russia’s security concerns that sparked the war.

As a super power country, the US should not have taken sides, but opted for helping the sides to stop the war and embrace dialogue for peaceful settlement of the conflict.

On the other hand, China has not entered in the Russia-Ukraine war to take sides. It has called for dialogue and peaceful settlement of the conflict.

On April 21, President Xi Jinping delivered  a keynote speech titled “Rising to Challenges and Building a Bright Future Through Cooperation” at the opening ceremony of the Boao Forum for Asia Annual Conference 2022 that was held in Boao, Hainan Province. XiProposed a Global Security Initiative, and stressed that humanity is a community with a shared future where all people rise and fall together, and all countries need to stay confident and united and build a bright future through cooperation.

“China would like to propose a Global Security Initiative, that is, to stay committed to the vision of common, comprehensive, cooperative and sustainable security, and work together to maintain world peace and security, ”Xi said. He called for staying committed to respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries, uphold non-interference in internal affairs, and respect the independent choices of development paths and social systems made by people in different countries.

He also called on countries to stay committed to abiding by the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, reject the Cold War mentality, oppose unilateralism, and say no to group politics and bloc confrontation; stay committed to taking the legitimate security concerns of all countries seriously, uphold the principle of indivisible security, build a balanced, effective and sustainable security architecture, and oppose the pursuit of one’s own security at the cost of others’ security.

Further more, he advocated for staying committed to peacefully resolving differences and disputes between countries through dialogue and consultation, support all efforts conducive to the peaceful settlement of crises, reject double standards, and oppose the wanton use of unilateral sanctions and long-arm jurisdiction. Finally he appealed for staying committed to maintaining security in both traditional and non-traditional domains, and work together on regional disputes and global challenges such as terrorism, climate change, cyber security and biosecurity.

Therefore, as China embraces dialogue and peaceful settlement of the Russia-Ukraine war, the US side is sounding war drums by supplying arms to Ukraine that will worsen the situation and prolong the war. The US does not want to listen to Russia’s security concerns but has already judged who is wrong and who is right.

The world is watching how the two super powers are either supporting the war or helping to stop the war and call on the conflicting parties to abide by the principles of the UN charter and embrace peaceful coexistence. “In war, whichever side may call itself the victor, there are no winners, but all are losers.” History will stand as the judge.
