This woman Pelosi and the US foreign policy on China

On February 4, 2020 Nancy Pelosi who was the house speaker tore up a copy of President Trump’s State of the Nation address, which had angered many other Democrats, some opting not to attend and some walking out mid-speech. Her action went viral on social media people some calling her brave while others criticized her for not showing any diplomatic behavior or respect for wondering whether her action was the best option and the right thing to do. At that time, I was among those who considered her a woman of principle.

Fast forward, when China protested her visit to Taiwan and she went ahead to with the trip, I saw in her an old woman who is suicidal with no consideration of the legacy she will leave behind. In fact, I changed my earlier perception of her as once my hero, now turned into a villain.  Being the highest US leader to visit Taiwan in 25 years and going there by a military jet, cannot be viewed as a normal visit. It was a military invasion. Republican Newt Gingrich was the last House speaker to visit Taiwan in 1997. Any slight mistake during Pelosi’s visit could ignite a crisis in the Taiwan Straits region likely to lead to a full scale war with far reaching consequences leading the world into age of disorder and instability.  As the relationship between China and the US gets increasingly tense, Taiwan has become by far the most dangerous source of tension and conflict. Pelosi, the first speaker of the US House of Representatives to visit Taiwan in 25 years, will meet Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen and also engage with Taiwanese lawmakers.

On landing in Taiwan, Pelosi wrote on her Twitter, “Our delegation’s visit to Taiwan honors America’s unwavering commitment to supporting Taiwan’s vibrant Democracy. Our discussions with Taiwan leadership reaffirm our support for our partner & promote our shared interests, including advancing a free & open Indo-Pacific region.”Analysts wonder what kind of Democracy US claims to poses that is shared with other countries in the world. In reality, from the 1945 nuclear bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan, to the 2021 withdraw from Afghanistan after 20 years, the US has been at war in many parts of the world destroying democracy and causing untold suffering to the people. The words democracy and human rights are usually used by the US a smoke screen   to pursue its own interests in other countries at the expense peace.

In 1979, the US recognized the One China policy, but since then, the US administration has not marched what was agreed upon with their actions in dealing with Taiwan. Instead, the US is interested in separating Taiwan from China for its geopolitical strategies aimed at using Taiwan as its base to destabilize China.

Nacy Pelosi is not new to controversies with China. In 1991 when she was a California representative she visited Beijing where she dodged her official escorts and went with two other members of Congress to hold an illegal protest at Tiananmen Square.

At the age of 82, Nancy Pelosi under expected good conduct would be a grandmother full of love to her children and grandchildren wishing them to live in a peaceful country, while wishing others also to live in peace.  She should be ageing gracefully and keen to leave behind a memorable legacy.  However, the three events of her illegal protest in Beijing in 1991, her tearing president Trump’s speech and her recent suicidal visit to Taiwan, reveal something peculiar about her aggressive character. Pelosi should have been acting as a responsible grandmother and diplomat to be a role model of the young generation. The world needs love not war.
